Description

Oman's Armed Forces are the Royal Army of Oman, Royal Navy of Oman, Royal Air Force of Oman, Royal Guard of Oman and Sultan's Special Force and other defense forces of Oman. Since their formal establishment in the early 1950s, with British assistance Armed Forces have twice overcome insurgencies which have threatened the integrity or social structure of the state, and more recently have contributed contingents or facilities to coalitions formed to protect Arab states of the Persian Gulf.

The flag of the Omani Armed Forces is based on British tradition, consisting of three horizontal stripes, red, light blue and dark blue representing three branches of Armed Forces. The Omani national flag is placed in the canton, while emblem of the Armed Forces is placed in the lower fly.

Royal Army of Oman

The Royal Army of Oman is the ground forces component of the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces. It was founded in 1907 as the Muscat Garrison.

Flag of the Army is red with national flag in the canton and with Army emblem is placed in the lower fly. The national flag is separated with a narrow white fimbriation from the red field of the flag.

Royal Guard of Oman

The Royal Guard of Oman is the royal guard of the Sultan of Oman. It is a separate service within the Sultan's Armed Forces and although equipped to carry out land defense operations, it is not part of the Royal Army of Oman. The Royal Guard is a personal security and ceremonial unit responsible for the protection of the Sultan and other senior members of the royal family.

Flag of the Royal Guard is crimson with Sultan� standard in the canton and with the Royal Guard emblem is placed in the lower fly.

Sultan's Special Force

The Sultan's Special Force is a separate force branch within the Sultan's Armed Forces and although equipped to carry out land defense operations, it is not part of the Royal Army of Oman.

Flag of the Special Force is purple with its emblem placed near to hoist.
